Geography

The southwest portion of Durham Regional Municipality, Ajax-Pickering consists of all of Ajax and part of Pickering – specifically, the parts of Pickering that aren’t south of Finch Avenue and West of Brock Road. A suburban-rural riding, it extends about 20 kilometres north of Lake Ontario to take in a fair bit of farmland.

Liberal Joe Dickson has won this seat by at least 10% in both elections since it was created for the 2007 provincial election. Prior to that, the majority of the riding was part of Pickering-Ajax-Uxbridge, and before that, Durham West – both of which have generally elected candidates from the winning party.

By the numbers

An established suburban-rural riding, Durham ranks in the top 15 in youngest median age (36.5), average household size (3.2), and median income ($32,717) for Southern Ontario.
