2 victims of Calgary stabbing spree members of local rock band, say friends

CALGARY- Friends confirm to Global News that two of the five young people killed at a house party in Brentwood were members of a local rock band.

Zackariah Rathwell and Josh Hunter are believed to be among those who died in the stabbing spree, which police have called the worst mass murder in Calgary’s history.

Rathwell was the lead singer in a band called Zackariah & The Prophets, while Hunter was the drummer. Just days earlier, the group played a sold out show for their CD release party.

Rathwell was identified as a student at the Alberta College of Art + Design.

A statement on their website reads, in part:

“ACAD is deeply shocked and saddened to hear a member of our community died suddenly early this morning. Zackariah Rathwell was an esteemed first-year student at ACAD. We send our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends, our thoughts and prayers are with them.”

They are offering counselling services to students by phone at 403-284-7666, or e-mail, counselling@acad.ca.

Two other young men and a young woman were also killed in the attack, and police have since taken one man into custody. He has been identified by sources as 22-year-old Matthew de Grood, a University of Calgary student who is also the son of a Calgary police officer.
