Alexa’s Team honoured for helping to reduce drunk driving deaths by more than 50%

Hundreds of RCMP and police officers were honoured today for helping to save hundreds of lives.

West Vancouver Police say 313 police officers from around British Columbia were named today to Alexa’s Team for their work in 2013.

The officers processed more than 50,000 drunk driving charges and penalties over the past five years in B.C., helping to reduce deaths caused by drinking and driving by 52 per cent.

The team was formed in 2008 to remember Alexa Middelaer, a young girl killed by a drunk driver in Ladner.

“Thank you for your authentic connections to others,” said Alexa’s mother, Laurel Middelaer. “And for nurturing those relationships that truly make a difference. And thank you for your hope, hope of what we can be as a province. Great things lie ahead, and you are amazing people. We are so honoured that you are Alexa’s team.”
