TORONTO — Alan Thicke is 67 years old and the father of sons aged 39, 37 and 16 from his first two marriages. His wife since 2005, Tanya, is 28 years his junior — and far more anxious to add to the family.

“As we sit here today it’s not a completely resolved issue,” Thicke said Wednesday during an appearance on Global Toronto’s News at Noon.

“Tanya deserves to have [children]. You have to deal with the realities. Does she want to be changing two sets of diapers one day?”

Family planning is just one of the issues the couple explores in the new TV series Unusually Thicke, which debuts April 16 on Slice.

Thicke acknowledges it’s not exactly a reality show.

“We knew what would happen because we were telling stories in a kind of sitcom manner,” explained Thicke, an Ontario native who starred on the popular Growing Pains. “[It’s] based on our real lives, but we knew where we were going.”

Add Tanya: “It’s us playing ourselves.”

Thicke said the series is intended to show the couple (and his teen son Carter) dealing with everyday issues.

“We’re trying to find the silver lining,” he said. “What’s the amusing, lighter way that we can deal with those family situations?”

One of those is the arrest of Tanya’s mother Ruth Miriam Callau for allegedly plotting the brutal murder of her husband in Bolivia.

“We’ve dealt with some really rather serious issues in our lives in the last year,” Thicke said.

Still, the laughs are plentiful in Unusually Thicke.

“Our biggest goal,” Tanya said, “is to be able to come into your home, entertain you and make you laugh — because life is serious enough.”

“And we have your address,” added her husband. “We’re coming over.”

Slice is owned by Shaw Media, parent company of Global.
