Man charged after dangerous joyride through city

CALGARY- Charges have been laid against a man, following a frightening joyride through the city that ended when the vehicle crashed into a fence.

Police were called to the 4100 block of 126 Ave. S.E. on Monday afternoon, after a man allegedly stole from a grocery store. The suspect refused to pull over for police, instead driving erratically at a high rate of speed.

At one point, he drove into oncoming traffic and onto a sidewalk, even heading west on eastbound Memorial Drive.

The ordeal ended when the vehicle crashed into a fence near the Franklin LRT station, in front of dozens of onlookers. The suspect tried to run away, but was taken down by police in a church parking lot.

Police say the car was stolen, and at least three other vehicles were hit during the incident. Fortunately, no one was injured.

Gary Neil Firth, 49, faces numerous charges including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, motor vehicle theft and shoplifting.
