Water, water everywhere at Grocery Showcase in Vancouver

Every year, some of the biggest food companies gather to show off their latest products to consumers.

At the Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers exhibition this weekend in Vancouver, all the rage seemed to be water.

“We get it from a spring and it contains in natural form trace amounts of lithium, which is a mineral associated with mood boosting, in your brain,” says Jory Mullard of Happy Water, showing off one of her bottled water products.

“When we tap into a tree in Quebec this is literally what we get,” says Gus Marroquin of Seva Maple Water.

“It’s pure maple water…it’s basically Canada’s coconut water.”

They claim the sap has 46 vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants in it. It’s part of a trend of grocers adding more products with more health benefits – and fewer calories.

“I’m looking for things with fewer calories, less sugar,” says Tammy Averill, a Country Grocer manager. “Things that are going to take the kids through recess, and not just give them a sugar rush.”

Brian Coxford reports.
