SASKATOON – The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN) has found a way to keep most of its employees.

After federal funding cuts, 66 workers were given layoff notices for the end of March.

FSIN Chief Perry Bellegarde says cuts to vice chiefs’ salaries and tapping into other sources of revenue have allowed most of the workers to keep their jobs.

He says eight people have been laid off, but they are still looking for funding to bring them back.

“I think there’s a lot of sighing because at least now we know and we can move on and do the great job that staff are expected to do in terms of services and programs and meeting the needs of our membership,” said Bellegarde.

Bellegarde says the FSIN has submitted proposals to several potential revenue sources and he hopes to hear back within the next several months.
