REGINA – The Regina Optimist Dolphin Swim club has been struck from the province’s corporate registry after failing to file its 2012-2013 financial statement with the provincial government.
According to the Information Services Corporation website, the club was removed from the registry on March 15.
It’s the latest blow for the competitive swim club, which was thrust into the spotlight earlier this week when a former club member revealed the alleged circumstances behind her expulsion. A senior member of the Regina Police Service is now being investigated for “discreditable conduct” in connection with the incident.
Publicly, the only response from the club was a short statement emailed to media on Tuesday, which stated (in part, full statement below): “The RODS Board has consistently welcomed and responded to direct inquiries (sic) regarding club operations from its membership.”
Yet there were still questions, and a group of club members decided to meet on Thursday night to discuss their concerns. That same day, club president Nick Egarhos sent an email to club members reminding them of the club’s code of conduct, which requires “that comments stated in public about coaches, swimmers, other members and/or officials are positive and supportive.”
Some members felt that the email was urging them not to speak publicly about their concerns.
“I have four kids, all four love to swim,” said Connie Wagner, one of the swim club members at Thursday’s meeting. “It’s scary to know that they won’t be able to do it, because their mom spoke out.”
On Friday, lawyer, Tony Merchant read the email and said, “if you look objectively at what’s here, the board is saying why we can’t talk. And then throwing in language that would lead members to think that they can’t talk either.”
The meeting went ahead, despite fear of reprisal.
The email also stated, “many of the allegations which have been published in the media this past week are false and misleading, which is generally the case when you only report one side of the story.”
Global News has made repeated requests for an interview with Egarhos, but all requests have been declined.
Comments
