SASKATOON- A second trial slated for Monday between feuding neighbours in the R.M. of Grant has been referred to mediation.

Facing one count of assault,  Michael Price will be heading to mediation in early May. The charge stems from an incident in which the family’s dog, an eight-month old Saint Bernard, was shot and killed by their neighbour, Eugene Krawchuk when it wandered into their pasture.

On March 20, Krawchuk was found guilty of shooting the dog without lawful excuse and possessing a firearm without license. Krawchuk was found not guilty of using a firearm in a careless manner.

“I admitted on the last trial that I obviously dragged him and for him to apologize to my daughter, once I realized it was my dog that was shot and not my daughter, my main aim was to get my daughter out of there, the pasture,” said Price outside of provincial court on Monday

“He was obviously reckless and I just wanted to her out and get her safe and that’s pretty much what I had to do and it’s pretty much what any other father would do.”

During the judge’s decision in the Krawchuk trial,  Eugene Krawchuk was sentenced to 12-months probation, ordered to pay the Price family $800 for the dog and $500 to the SPCA. Both Eugene and his wife were given a no direct or indirect contact order with the Price family.

“We’re still getting run through the mill really, his daughter has set up some sort of hate page, you know putting stuff up on social media and obviously that’s been mighty distressful for myself and my wife and daughter because everything is to my daughter,” said Price.

Price has told police about the activity and describes the Krawchuks’ efforts to get their legal fees covered by the public on a crowdfunding site, a “kick in the teeth.”
