WINNIPEG – City residents wondering whether their homes are at risk of frozen pipes or if they should do anything to prevent the problem can now find address-specific information online.

The city’s online information service now supplies information about whether a home is at increased risk of frozen pipes.

The city added another 865 properties to the list of homes at risk of frozen pipes on Monday, bringing the total to 6,312. People whose homes are at risk should always keep one tap running at a trickle – about the amount of a drinking straw — city officials say.

City staff telephoned homes added to the list on Monday evening and notices are being hand-delivered to the properties Tuesday.

There have been 1,960 frozen water pipe reports this winter, city numbers show. Only 730 of those have had service restored, leaving 1,230 properties waiting for pipe thawing.

Among homes with frozen pipes, 459 have city-installed temporary hose lines between their houses and a neighbour’s home, while 771 have no water supply.

City crews are currently thawing frozen pipes reported from Feb. 22 to March 4, the municipal website says on its frozen pipes information page.
