KELOWNA — RCMP are reminding pedestrians to make eye contact with drivers after one was hit by a car Tuesday morning.

It happened at the intersection of KLO and Casorso Road.

The pedestrian, a Chinese student studying at Okanagan College, was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries including a possible concussion.

According to police, the pedestrian attempted to cross the road even though traffic had not come to a stop.

Corporal Gevan Dale with Central Okanagan Traffic Services says the driver who struck the pedestrian was following a van and didn’t see the pedestrian until it was too late.

“It’s a reminder to pedestrians to make eye contact. Just because you’re in a marked crosswalk, you may have the right to cross the road but the weight of that vehicle is going to win every time.”

Police say that depending on the outcome of their investigation, the pedestrian may be charged and not the driver, whose windshield was broken by the impact.
