The 2014 Winter Paralympics officially kicked off Friday in a lavish ceremony that included an appearance by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Wheelchair curler Sonja Gaudet acted as Canada’s flag-bearer for the opening ceremony.

Canada won 19 medals at the Vancouver Paralympics four years ago.

On Twitter, Canadian Paralympian gold medallist and ice sledge hockey and basketball player Billy Bridges shared a photo of Team Canada at Sochi:

Despite Russia’s military moves in Crimea, Ukraine will compete in the Games. The country made the announcement shortly before today’s opening ceremony.
