EDMONTON – Londonderry Mall was evacuated Thursday evening, after police say a suspicious package was left at a bank during a robbery.

Police were called to the north Edmonton mall just after 6:00 p.m. after an attempted robbery at the Bank of Montreal on the east side of the mall. The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) says the Tactical Unit was called in after a suspicious package was left behind by the suspect.

“Inside the bank there was a demand for some money. He left the bank and a device was left inside the bank,” said Inspector Ed McIsaac with the EPS.

The mall was evacuated and closed for the night.

Officers cordoned off the bank, and shortly after 9:30 p.m. explosive technicians were sent inside to inspect the device and determine what to do next.

Around 11:25 p.m. Thursday, police tape was taken down from the scene. Police have not yet released details on what was inside the package.

Police says it’s also not known if the suspect got away with any money.

McIsaac says mall security did an excellent job dealing with the situation.

“Because of the time of day, 6:00 p.m., the mall was pretty active,” he said. “Security at the mall did an outstanding job of working with us, removing the people, gathering the witnesses, gathering the complainants and centralizing everybody to assist the investigation.”

The following statement was issued by a spokesperson for Londonderry Mall:

“At approximately 6:00PM on Thursday, February 27th Londonderry Mall Security received a call from Bank of Montreal indicating a robbery had just occurred. The suspect fled the scene and left a suspicious package behind. Edmonton Police Service were dispatched by Security and were on the scene immediately. As the safety of visitors and employees is of utmost importance to Londonderry, the mall was fully evacuated and will remain closed for the remainder of the evening until the police complete their investigation,” said Sarah Geddes with Sass Communications.
