UPDATE: Saskatchewan no longer under wind chill warning

Saskatchewan is no longer under a wind chill warning, according to Environment Canada. Skytracker Weather

SASKATOON – Saskatchewan is no longer under any wind chill warnings, as of early Sunday afternoon.

Extreme wind chill values below minus 40 were expected to develop across the province Thursday and worsen into the weekend.

Wind chills were expected to hover in the minus 40s Friday and into the minus 50s Saturday morning across most of the province.

A weak low pressure system tracking through southern Saskatchewan gave way to another surge of bitterly cold Arctic air.

The longer lasting concern was the persistent extreme cold in the wake of the system.

Across the south, temperatures will fall into the minus 25 to 30 degree mark Thursday night, coupled with winds of 20 or 30 km/h, nearly all of the south will see wind chill values dip below minus 40 by Friday morning.

While winds will diminish during the day, there is little reprieve from the cold in store for Friday as temperatures will at best hold steady before falling even further Friday night.

Overnight low temperatures into Saturday will fall to near minus 40 Celsius in most areas, where even a slight wind will generate wind chill values below minus 50.

While some locations may see slight moderation in wind chill values with calm winds or brief warming in the afternoon hours, this extreme cold was expected to last into next week.

Environment Canada issues wind chill warnings when the wind speed is forecast to be 15 km/h or greater and wind chill values of minus 40 or colder are expected to last for at least three hours.

At extreme wind chill values of minus 40 frostbite on exposed skin may occur in less than 10 minutes. At values below minus 50 frostbite may occur in less than five minutes.
