Urban drilling at forefront at information session

LETHBRIDGE – The on going debate over urban drilling takes centre stage at the Yates Memorial Theatre Monday night.

Lethbridge City council is hosting a Community Issues Committee open to the public with the sole purpose of gaining more information and knowledge on urban drilling.

The topic of oil and gas development within municipal limits has become a contentious issue in the last six months as residents have become more aware of GoldenKey Oil’s plans to drill three exploratory wells on the city’s west side.

City council has repeatedly stressed they are opposed to the project and the plans have received a lot of backlash from the public.

However, Mayor Chris Spearman says residents should anticipate Saturday’s meeting to focus on urban drilling in general and not just one proposed project.

“The proponent this time is GoldenKey but it might be somebody else next time” he adds.

Things kick off with a presentation at 7:00 p.m. from panelists including representatives from Alberta Energy, Alberta Health Services and the Alberta Energy Regulator.

Residents will also have the opportunity to ask questions which had to be submitted ahead of the meeting, with things wrapping up around 9:30 p.m.
