TORONTO – Canada has won silver in the women’s 3,000-metre short-track speed skating event after second-place China was disqualified.

The Canadian women had a time of 4:10.641. Korea won gold with a time of 4:09.498.

China’s team looked as though it had won silver but was penalized shortly after the race because their skaters did not immediately leave the track after passing off to their teammates. This bumped fourth-place finishers Italy into bronze-medal position.

This is Canada’s second Olympic silver in a row in this event. They also finished second in Vancouver. That medal was also achieved because of a disqualification – South Korea was disqualified for impeding, so China and Canada moved up to gold and silver respectively.
