WATCH: It’s official the winter Olympics are now underway after an opening ceremony full of Russian culture and heritage. Allison Vuchnich reports.
The Sochi Winter Olympics launched Friday with an opening ceremony meant to showcase to the world the ultimate achievement of Vladimir Putin’s Russia.
Just after the sun set, Russian TV star Yana Churikova shouted to the crowd: “Welcome to the centre of the universe!”
This is certainly the case for the 3,000 athletes who will complete in 98 events over the next two weeks.
It will be, too, for all those worried about potential terrorist threats and human rights abuses.
