MAYERTHORPE, Alta. – People in Mayerthorpe, Alberta, plan to mark the 2005 murder of four young Mounties with a quiet candlelight vigil tonight at the Fallen Four memorial park.
Organizers say the town is toning down its remembrance of slain constables Peter Schiemann, Leo Johnston, Anthony Gordon and Brock Myrol.
Margaret Thibault, who used to work with the four Mounties and helped develop the park, says people can’t keep the tragedy in the forefront forever.
She says people need to remember, but to also live their lives.
Tonight’s ceremony will include the reading out of the names of all Canadian police and soldiers who died over the past year in the line of duty.
An annual fund-raising hockey game between Mounties and local players will also be more low-key.
The memorial comes as the RCMP finishes a review of a program that helps officers get treatment for post-traumatic stress.
Mounties say the review and a pilot project that encourages officers to open up about their jobs will help members deal with the fallout of investigating gruesome crimes.
They also say the review wasn’t prompted specifically by Mayerthorpe.
