Thousands of anti-government protesters clashed with riot police in the Ukrainian capital Sunday in response to recently approved anti-protest legislation.

Furious protesters took over the centre of Kyiv, upset over the harsh legislation  passed earlier in the week and seen as an attempt to quell the anti-government demonstrations that have gripped the country for nearly two months.

Ukraine President Viktor Yanukovych ignored Western criticism over his government’s handling of the protests, approving the new legislation which many have called unconstitutional.

The protests were sparked by Yanukovych’s decision to shelve an economic treaty with the European Union and instead focus on moving towards closer ties with Russia.
