For days Egyptian Canadians have been waiting for something big to happen, but no one knew when it was coming. Many expected Mubarak to make the announcement on Thursday, but when it didn’t come, those in Edmonton’s Egyptian community stayed up all night keeping an eye on what was happening.

Friday morning’s announcement caught many off guard, but it certainly didn’t take long for the word to spread and for celebrations to begin.

At the U of A on Friday afternoon, a small parade of about two dozen students made it’s way through campus chanting and singing.

Although social media has been credited with uniting Egyptians around the world as the revolution played out, many in the Edmonton community say that same technology is making them feel especially disconnected as they wish they could be home in Egypt to celebrate in person.
