EDMONTON – RCMP believe strong crosswinds and blowing snow were factors in a fatal collision north of Maskwacis (formerly Hobbema) Wednesday.
The collision happened on Highway 2A, about five kilometres north of Maskwacis, shortly before 1:30 p.m.
Exact details of the collision are not known, but RCMP say it involved a car heading south on the highway and a minivan, which was heading north.
Three people from the van and two people from the car were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
An 81-year-old woman, who was inside the car at the time, was pronounced dead on the scene. RCMP say she was from Tees, AB.
RCMP say alcohol does not appear to be a factor. But Sgt. Jim Lank says strong crosswinds caused drifting and blowing snow on the highway. Lank says the highway was also very icy at the time.
Highway 2A was closed to traffic in both directions for several hours Wednesday afternoon.
