A 30-year-old Delta man is behind bars this morning, accused in a wild and violent crime spree that spanned several Metro Vancouver communities Sunday night.

It started as a high-speed crash along Highway 91 and ended with several people hurt and numerous vehicles wrecked.

The action started around 7 p.m. on Sunday when a man allegedly rammed his car into the back of a minivan on the East-West Connector in Richmond. The van flipped with three people inside, but they were able to escape serious injury.

The man fled the area on foot, knocking on the door of a nearby home. When the homeowner answered the door, he was allegedly stabbed several times, before the suspect then stole the homeowner’s car.

The man then drove the stolen car to East 27th and Victoria Drive, where he goes to an ATM at the TD Canada Trust and tries to mug a customer. The victim suffered superficial cuts in the incident and was treated by paramedics on site.

The suspect then drove away from the bank, and got into a head-on crash with another car on Victoria Drive. No one was injured in that crash, as it was at a low speed.

The suspect then attempted to carjack another vehicle whose occupants stopped to see if they could assist with the crash. He slashed at the man and woman in the car while their two children were inside. However, he wasn’t able to take the vehicle. The couple suffered superficial slash wounds and the man ran across the street to an Esso gas station.

At the Esso, he carjacked a Honda Civic and drove off. The driver was not injured in the carjacking.

That is when police issued a public warning, saying the man was considered armed and dangerous.

Shortly after 11 p.m. the Honda Civic was spotted in North Surrey near Ravine Road and 132 Street.

The suspect crashed the car into a ditch and fled on foot into some woods. More than a dozen officers were called to the area, along with a dog-tracking team.

The team found the suspect hiding in a dense wooded area.

“This is a very rare occurrence where we see essentially an out-of-control and extremely violent crime spree involving three stabbings, two carjackings, a home invasion and spread out over three different cities within the Lower Mainland,” says RCMP Insp. Tim Shields. “We are very grateful for the fact that we have this man in custody now, and we’re thankful to the public for their help in looking for this vehicle.”
