HALIFAX – A fourth year student at Saint Francis Xavier University has died while volunteering in Africa.
In a statement to staff and students, Ramsay Duff, vice president of recruitment and student experience, said Melissa Landry was volunteering at an orphanage in Tanzania when she died from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.
Landry, an Antigonish resident and a human kinetics student, was volunteering with an organization called HQ International Volunteer.
“Melissa received her X-Ring just prior to leaving overseas and was looking forward to graduating this spring with her many friends and classmates. An active member of the StFX community, she will be forever remembered for her generous spirit,” the statement reads.
The university will be offering counseling and chaplaincy services to students when classes resume next week.
