Environment Canada says snow is on the way for much of the South Coast on Thursday night and Friday morning.

“Vancouver Island can expect snow late Thursday afternoon, pushing into the Lower Mainland by early evening,” says Global News meteorologist Kristi Gordon. “The commute on Friday morning certainly will be slow.”

As the wind picks up Friday morning, the snow will change to rain near the water.

“We already have the cold air, this system is bringing in the moisture and warmer air, so the amount of snow will depend on how quickly we warm up on Friday morning. Areas near the water will warm up first, and areas out into valley later,” says Gordon.

Up to 10 cm is expected inland and on higher ground.

The special weather statement is in effect for East Vancouver Island, Fraser Valley, Greater Victoria, Howe Sound, Inland Vancouver Island, Metro Vancouver, Southern Gulf Islands, Sunshine Coast, West Vancouver Island and Whistler.
