16-year-old charged in violent assault in New Westminster

UPDATE: The victim of the assault, 19 year old Karim Meskine, has died as a result of injuries from the attack. The suspect was charged with Aggravated Assault and Assault with a Weapon yesterday, and investigators will be recommending murder charges.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has arrested and charged a 16-year-old in connection to a violent attempted robbery in New Westminster on December 17.

The victim, a 19-year-old male, was found badly injured near 23rd Street and 8th Avenue by a passing driver and taken to hospital, where he remains in a coma. Police say due to the man’s serious condition, he is not expected to survive.

The 16-year-old turned himself into police shortly after the attempted robbery. The teen appeared in court in New Westminster this morning and was charged with one count of aggravated assault and one count of assault with a weapon.

The names of the victim and suspect will not be released at this point.

IHIT is continuing their investigation to determine why the young man was targeted by the suspect.
