Suspicious package in downtown Halifax revealed to be misplaced lunch bag

HALIFAX – Halifax police officers blocked off a downtown street on Monday morning to investigate a suspicious package that turned out to be a forgotten lunch bag.

Police say they received a call around 9:30 a.m. about an unattended black bag on Barrington Street, which had been left in front of a downtown business for almost two hours.

“We cordoned the area, blocked traffic between Prince [Street] and Sackville [Street], until our K-9 unit and our forensic investigator with the robot arrived on scene,” said Const. Pierre Bourdages, a spokesperson with the Halifax Regional Police.

The robot slowly made its way down the street, and stopped in front of the suspicious package. Moments later, Kevin Blackie, the bag’s owner, arrived.

Blackie parked his truck next to a police vehicle and quickly jumped out to explain the misunderstanding to the officers on scene. He said he forgot it on the side of the street when he left the area after doing some work there earlier in the morning.

“I just took a measurement with the laser level, and jumped in my truck and drove away and left it there,” he said.

Blackie said he later remembered the bag and had been driving back to pick it up when he heard the area had been blocked off.

“I tried to call 911 to tell them what was going on, so as not to cause too much panic, and when I got here, it was like this,” he said.

Police said as soon as the bag was deemed safe, they returned it to Blackie and re-opened the street to traffic.

Bourdages said no charges will be laid.

“If there was no intent to harm or alarm anybody, then there’s no charges there. We just want to make sure everybody is safe and things are done properly,” he said.

While it was an unexpected adventure for Blackie, he said he was relieved to find his bag.

“I figured someone would pick up a nice bag like that that and walk away with it,” he said.

Police say anybody who sees a suspicious package should call to report it so officers can investigate.
