Speaking at a press conference in Ottawa on Wednesday, Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA) lawyer Cara Zweibel called the federal government’s invocation of the Emergencies Act in February 2022 amid the trucker protests “unlawful” and “unconstitutional.” “The protests needed to be addressed. But the government also had an obligation to comply with the law and use emergency powers as a truly last resort,” Zweibel said.
