British Transport Minister Grant Shapps said Friday that the U.K. has banned flights from South Africa and some neighbouring countries after a new COVID-19 variant was identified. Shapps said chief medical officers had met and expressed concern that it is “the most significant variant” they had encountered and that there is potential for it to “escape the vaccine.”
