U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he would issue an order to protect American historical monuments. The president said “numerous people” were in jail or were going to jail and he is looking at “long-term sentences” for protesters who tried to topple a statue of former President Andrew Jackson near the White House late on Monday. Jackson enslaved Black people as a plantation owner and is remembered for the Trail of Tears, a forced removal of Native Americans from the South that killed thousands.
