On Saturday, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio addressed the protests that occurred in Brooklyn on Friday night in response to the death of an unarmed Black man, George Floyd, saying that “there’s a poison of structural racism” within the country that “haunts the lives of people of colour every day.” The death of Floyd occurred while in police custody in Minneapolis, Minn. on Monday after a police officer kneeled on his neck for several minutes.
