7.7-magnitude quake rocks Myanmar, over 1,000 dead

A devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, causing widespread destruction and affecting Thailand and China. Mandalay suffered the worst impact, with over a thousand fatalities and thousands more injured or missing. Rescue operations are ongoing as Myanmar appeals for international aid, with China and India responding. Thailand reported at least six deaths, and officials continue to assess damage. “In Mandalay, it’s so desperate. The damage is so severe — I’ve never seen anything like this in my life,” said Su Mon Htay, a humanitarian worker on the ground. “People are in shock, and communication is down. We don’t even know if our friends and families are safe.” The region remains on high alert for aftershocks as recovery efforts proceed.
