Duda received 51.03 per cent of Sunday's vote, while Trzaskowski got 48.97 per cent, according to final results Monday from the state electoral commission.

President Andrzej Duda, a 48-year-old conservative backed by the nationalist ruling Law and Justice party, was running against 10 other candidates as he sought a second 5-year term.

The election must be held within 60 days of this announcement, or by late July, according to the resolution by the State Electoral Commission.

The Law and Justice party won some 32.3 per cent of votes for provincial assemblies, compared with 26.9 per cent in a vote four years earlier.
