Many flights were cancelled at major airports throughout Japan, including Tokyo's Narita and Haneda, as Typhoon Trami approached. The storm destroyed power lines on the southwestern islands of Okinawa on Saturday.

A powerful typhoon blew through western Japan on Tuesday, causing heavy rain to flood the region's main offshore international airport and high winds to blow a tanker into a connecting bridge, disrupting land and air travel.

Evacuation advisories were issued for some 280,000 people as the wind and rain began picking up.
