SASKATOON – Abuse by coaches and parents is being blamed for a drop in the number of young referees for minor hockey games in Saskatoon.
The Saskatoon Referees Association says it has 160 refs for this season, but that’s down from more than 200 in 2012.

The association is trying to get around the declining numbers by providing more mentoring opportunities for refs and recruiting experienced players who have finished their midget hockey careers.
Both the association and Saskatoon Minor Hockey are reminding coaches, parents and players that formal complaints about abuse of officials can lead to suspensions.
