Pedestrian killed in collision near Rocky Mountain House

EDMONTON – A 14-year-old girl was killed Friday, after being struck by a vehicle on a highway near Rocky Mountain House.

RCMP, EMS and fire crews were called to the collision on Highway 11, about 40 kilometres west of Rocky Mountain House, around 9:45 p.m.

Police say a pickup truck was heading east on Highway 11 and hit the girl while she was walking on the highway. RCMP say she was walking near an SUV, which was parked on the shoulder of the highway at the time.

When the driver of the truck stopped to help, an altercation broke out between the driver and the people inside the SUV, RCMP said.

According to police, the people in the SUV then put the injured girl in the vehicle and drove off.

The SUV was located in the ditch shortly after. When police arrived, they say there were several intoxicated people inside the vehicle with the critically injured girl.

The 14-year-old Eden Valley girl was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name has not been released.

The driver of the truck was treated in hospital and released.

RCMP say they are still investigating the collision.
