TORONTO – A new island was formed off the coast of southern Japan Wednesday after a massive underwater volcano erupted, unearthing the small islet.
According to the Japanese coast guard, the island located off the coast of Nishinoshima measures close to 650 feet in diameter.
A volcanologist with the coast guard, Hiroshi Ito, told the FNN news network that it was possible the new island might be eroded away.
“But it also could remain permanently,” he said.
In September, a 300-foot-wide island formed off the coast of Pakistan following a magnitude-7.7 earthquake.
