Watch: Baby born in a cab

A Vancouver couple is still in shock after their baby was born at the back of a taxi on their way to a hospital this weekend.

Just after five o’clock on Sunday morning, cab driver Abdul Jabbar picked up Anita Devi and Veersing Rana.

They were heading to B.C. Women’s Hospital to have a baby, but the baby had other plans.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Just three minutes into the cab ride, she made her entry into the world.

“It started out as an ordinary call, but turned out to be an amazing trip I will never forget,” says Jabbar.

The healthy six-pound girl was born on 41st Avenue just after the cab passed Fraser Street.

Saturday night, the couple went to hospital with labour pains, but they were sent home. A few hours later, they were back in a cab making a dash for the delivery room.

Now, the family is wondering why they couldn’t deliver in hospital.

The hospital says it will meet with the family, but the assessment did not provide any indication the patient was going to have a delivery any time soon.

While they are grateful to the cab driver, Devi and her husband hope others will be spared the same experience.
