Months after a Canada-wide warrant was issued for his arrest, rogue Burnaby dentist Tung Sheng Wu has turned himself in.
After months of evading police, the B.C. man accused of setting up an illegal dental surgery for hundreds of patients in his Burnaby bedroom has turned himself in.
Tung Sheng (David) Wu was sentenced in October to three months in jail for contempt for ignoring a court order to stop practicing dentistry without a licence. However, the B.C.’s College of Dental Surgeons were unable to locate him.
A B.C. judge found him in contempt and ordered him to pay the college’s legal bills, which so far have cost more than $140,000. A Canada-wide warrant was issued for his arrest, and the College of Dental Surgeons believed he was attempting to set up a new clinic in Toronto.
Not surprisingly, they’re happy he’s in custody.
“We’re waiting to learn more, but we are relieved,” said Jerome Marburg, CEO of the College of Dental Surgeons, to Global News.
The College will be making an application to the BC Supreme Court asking that Wu be transported back to Vancouver.
Wu’s illegal dental operation was discovered this past May. The RCMP, the College of Dental Surgeons and its private investigators, Focus Solutions, raided his home office in Burnaby.
In his office, which was a converted bedroom, investigators found a dentist chair, equipment and an old autoclave sterilizer. According to authorities, there was little evidence of Wu properly sterilizing his equipment.
Wu had been also ordered by the court to stop practising dentistry without a licence back in 2003.
