REGINA – Thousands packed into the Brandt Centre on Monday to remember those who made the biggest sacrifices for the country.
The ceremony provided stories at every turn.
“The Germans came up with an acoustic torpedo,” said veteran Osborne Lakness, who served in the navy. “We had a cable and some bars that made the same noise as the propellers, and we saved a lot of ships that way.”
For Korean War veteran Sgt. Larry Adams, today’s moment of silence was a time to reflect on something his father once told him: “Don’t be afraid to be afraid.”
“And, at 19-years-old, I didn’t have a clue what he meant,” Adams said. “And then I got a chance to find out.”
Adams served on the front lines, where he faced attacks at any hour. Adams lost five comrades in his regiment.
He says he entered battle as a boy, and came back a man.
“As a youth it’s just adventure, but as you get older, it’s a necessity in order to live the life that we like to live and be part of,” said Adams.
The federal government designated 2013 as the Year of the Korean War Veteran. It’s been 60 years since the war that claimed over 500 Canadian lives.
