New Alberta licence plate honours men and women of the Canadian Forces

EDMONTON – Albertans will soon have a new way to honour and support the men and women of the Canadian Forces.

The Alberta Government is launching a new licence plate, which will be available for pre-order early next year.

“Albertans admire the men and women of the Canadian Forces who put their lives on (the) line, away from the comforts of family and home, as they stand up for the rights and freedoms of Canadians and people around the world. The Alberta government is honoured to offer a new licence plate as a way we can demonstrate our gratitude to them and give back to members and their families through the Support our Troops campaign,” Minister of Service Alberta Manmeet Bhullar said in a statement.

The plates, which have a yellow ribbon and the ‘Support our Troops’ slogan on them, will cost $150. This includes the regular registration fees as well as expenses for production and delivery.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the plates will go directly to the Support our Troops campaign to assist members of the Canadian Forces and their families.

“Our troops are proud of their service to Canada and appreciate the recognition from Albertans. I know they will be honoured when they see these licence plates on the vehicles of Albertans and the proceeds will help provide essential support to those who need it,” said Brigadier-General Christian Juneau, 3rd Canadian Division Commander, Army in Western Canada.

“The Support our Troops campaign is a really great campaign and the initiative they are taking here with this licence plate, in order to raise extra funds for it, is really appreciated,” added Lieutenant Abby Edmison.

In 2005 the government began offering veterans’ licence plates featuring a poppy on the left side. Since then, nearly 21,000 veterans’ plates have been issued in the province.
