Mental assessment ordered for man arrested in arson outside 24 Sussex

OTTAWA – A 29-year-old man accused of starting a fire outside Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s official residence has been ordered to undergo a 30-day psychiatric assessment.

Daniel Skahan is charged with mischief under $5,000, possession of incendiary material and failing to comply with conditions of an assessment order.

Dozens of police cruisers rushed to 24 Sussex Dr. around 9:15 p.m. Saturday after witnesses called about a man pouring a flammable liquid on the sidewalk outside the gate and lighting it on fire.

Police said the man posed no danger to Harper and his family.

Skahan is next scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 15.
