Jim Dinning named U of C Chancellor

CALGARY – Former Alberta cabinet minister Jim Dinning has been appointed the University of Calgary’s 12th Chancellor.

The U of C senate voted Tuesday morning to approve Dinning, chairman of the Western Financial Group and former executive vice-president of TransAlta Corp.

Former chancellor Joanne Cuthbertson was pleased to hand over the reigns, calling this an exciting time for the university.

"When it comes to serving our community, there are few people as passionate and accomplished as Jim Dinning. Jim’s experience, the value he places on post-secondary education, and his strong ties to the corporate, government and non-profit sectors make him an outstanding choice for Chancellor.

"I believe he will leave his mark on the bold future that lies ahead for the University of Calgary."

Dinning held several key positions during his 11 years as a member of the legislative assembly, including as provincial treasurer for Ralph Klein’s Tory government from 1992 to 1997.

In 2006, Dinning was a front-runner in the Tory leadership race to replace the retiring Klein, but lost in a dramatic vote to Ed Stelmach who has since led the Tories as Premier.
