Suspicious package on George Street prompts evacuation of Peterborough City Hall

Police say a suspicious package located in downtown Peterborough Thursday was not a threat. A section of George St. was closed for several hours and city hall was evacuated as police investigated. Katrina Squazzin has more – May 26, 2022

A section of George Street in Peterborough was closed Thursday afternoon after a suspicious package was found in front of City Hall.

The Peterborough Police Service did not state the reason for the closure, citing an “ongoing investigation” in both a Tweet at 12:36 p.m. and in correspondence with Global News Peterborough.

The street was closed to vehicles and pedestrians between McDonnel and Murray streets.

The City of Peterborough at 1:25 p.m. said City Hall would remain closed for the remainder of Thursday. The building was evacuated.

Police were focusing their attention on a white object on the sidewalk in front of City Hall.

The object appears to be bottle of dandelion killer with wires coming out of it.

The OPP’s hazardous disposal unit arrived to the site to examine the bottle.

Around 4:45 p.m., police removed the package and George Street was reopened to traffic.

Police around 6:20 p.m. stated the roads were closed as a safety precaution and that OPP determined the container was not a threat.

“Thank you to the public for their patience during this time,” police said.
