The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure is Canada’s largest single day, volunteer-led fundraising event dedicated to raising funds for breast cancer research, education and awareness programs.

The latest health and medical news emailed to you every Sunday.

Most participants, who took part in either a one kilometre walk or five kilometre run, were decked out in pink, the symbolic colour of the cause.

Last year, Edmontonians united to raise over $2 million for the cause.

“Everybody has a mother or a sister or whichever, everybody wants to find a cure for breast cancer, we all want the same thing,” said volunteer Necha Aitken. “I think that message of hope and that message of solidarity makes this event just so well attended.”

Sunday’s event raised $1.4 million for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
