RCMP cleared in Alberta fatal high-speed chase

EDMONTON – An investigation into a November 2009 fatal high-speed chase that involved RCMP members has determined that the police acted properly.

On Nov. 19, Hinton RCMP were notified of a van speeding along Highway 16. Police chased the van, which collided with an oncoming car. The drivers of both vehicles were killed instantly.

Because police officers were involved in the chase that led to the death, investigators from the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team were brought in to investigate.

Their investigation, which reviewed 36 civilian statements, 13 RCMP statements and video from a camera installed on the cruiser involved, determined that the police officers followed all procedures properly.

The head of ASIRT, Clifton Purvis, is scheduled to talk to the media about the investigation Friday morning.
