A 47-year old man is facing several charges, including three counts of attempted murder, after a “violent incident” in Mississauga, police say.
In a press release issued Tuesday, Peel Regional Police said on March 7 at around 10 a.m., officers received a call regarding a disturbance in the Southampton Drive and Eglington Avenue West area.
Peel Regional Police said two adults and two children were taken to hospital.
In a press release issued Monday, the province’s police watchdog — the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) — said there was an “interaction between officers and a 47-year-old man.”
“During which one officer discharged his firearm,” the release reads. “The man is not believed to have been struck with a bullet.”
The SIU is an independent agency that investigates the conduct of officers in incidents that have resulted in death, serious injury, or alleged sexual assault.
Kristy Denette, a spokesperson for the SIU, told reporters at a press conference on Monday, that the man was naked during his interaction with police and was armed with a hammer and a knife.
The agency said the man was arrested and taken to hospital with “serious injuries.”
The nature of his injuries was not immediately known.
Peel Paramedics told Global News four people in total were assessed.
A woman was found with obvious signs of trauma outside of the residence and was taken to a trauma centre in life-threatening condition, police said.
Police initially said a male child was transported to a local hospital in “stable condition.”
However, in an update just before 3:30 p.m., officers said the child was transported to a trauma centre in “serious, stable, non-life threatening condition.”
According to the SIU, the child is 11-years-old.
Another boy was assessed at the scene and was initially not taken to hospital, paramedics said. However, police said a short time later the child was sent to hospital as a precaution to be assessed.
“The second child is physically uninjured,” Const. Heather Cannon told reporters on Monday afternoon.
The SIU confirmed the second child is two years old.
Investigators would also not release the relationship, if any, among the victims. Police would also not call the incident domestic violence but said they are looking into that.
On Tuesday, police said the man, 47, from Mississauga was taken into custody and transported to a trauma centre with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.
He has been charged with three counts each of attempted murder, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and uttering threats.
Police said the man was held for a bail hearing and appeared remotely in court in Brampton.
Officers said he was remanded into custody.
According to the SIU, three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.
The agency said anyone with information is asked to contact SIU investigators at 1-800-787-8529.
