The two-alarm occurrence at 178 Nebo Road between Rymal Road and Stone Church Road East started just before 10 p.m., according to Hamilton fire.

Flames were intense enough at times to force crews to back away from the building housing Harper’s Market grocery store.

“Immediately, exterior firefighting operations were initiated, including the use of two aerial ladders and their master water streams,” chief Dave Cunliffe said in email.

Firefighters went as far as to alert city residents via a Twitter post of heavy smoke caused after the blaze broke through the structures roof, about an hour into the operation.
