EDMONTON- Alberta Health Services has lifted the precautionary air quality advisory it issued for Edmonton and areas north and east of the city.
The advisory was put in place on Saturday after a power outage caused flare-ups at refineries in Strathcona County.
AltaLink’s substation, which supplies much of the industrial load in the area, had a significant drop in voltage shortly after 8:00 a.m. As a result, refineries in the area began flaring, which produces tall flames and causes dark smoke to come out of the stacks of the refineries. Flaring is a safety measure refineries take to burn excess hydrocarbons and release pressure in the plant.
AHS says air quality in the City of Edmonton is no longer being impacted.
