EDMONTON- Several homes in north Edmonton were evacuated Friday night, after an ammonia leak in a nearby commercial building.

Fire crews were called to the area of 122 Street and 121 Avenue shortly after 8:00 p.m.

Homes within a one block radius were evacuated as a precaution, as crews worked to contain the leak.

“Ammonia is something of a respiratory issue and right now there’s nothing outside the building that should be of any concern to any citizens,” Deputy Chief John Lamb with Edmonton Fire Rescue Services said Friday night.

About 34 firefighers, two HAZMAT teams and a safety team responded to the call.
