Many people lined up overnight in downtown Vancouver and around the Lower Mainland to get their hands on the new iPhone 5S and 5C.
About 150 people lined up outside the Apple Store in Pacific Centre to get their hands on the new device.
Alex Jurgenson was the first person in line, and he got there at 4 p.m. on Thursday afternoon. The doors opened at 8 a.m. Friday morning.
Being blind, he says the new technology helps him in his everyday life.
“I mean you can take an everyday example like a text message or being able to get good walking directions to somewhere, and have them read out as you approach intersections and that’s really where the iPhone shines. It’s brought every day challenges like picking out a bowl of cereal and really made them into something that can be done rather easily and in Apple’s style of simplicity.”

Jurgenson says the apps for the iPhone help him to identify objects when he is out shopping, and the audible commands help him as well.
The iPhone 5S comes in three colours – gold, silver and space gray. It is Apple’s most powerful phone to date and comes with a number of features.
One of the most exciting features is the new Touch ID – a sensor built right into the home button. You can register five digits and then you will be able to unlock your phone no matter how you are holding the handset. So no more four-digit passcode.
It also has the A7 chip, which gives you operating system and graphics performance up to two times faster than the current A6 chip.
The M7 Coprocessor measures motion data and requires less battery to do so. The new camera is also an improved feature, with an 8MP iSight camera with 1.5 micron pixels. The flash also changes colour depending on the light in the photo.
The iPhone 5C is the ‘cheaper’ phone. It comes in five plastic colours, with matching home screen and wallpaper. It also has the 8MP iSight camera.
The new iPhone 5s do not come cheap however.
The iPhone 5C comes in at $649 CDN for the 16 GB model, without a contract.
The iPhone 5S is $719 CDN without a contract, that’s only a $70 difference.
